5 Fun Things to Do in Phoenix

Sep 7 , 2011

Phoenix, the unofficial capital of the American Southwest, is a great family vacation destination, combining the drama of the desert landscape with big city amenities like chic hotels, dining, and shopping. Check out these five fun things to do in Phoenix.

1. Musical Instrument Museum

One of the most fun things in Phoenix for music lovers, the Musical Instrument Museum, which opened in 2010, displays both folk and modern instruments from nearly 200 countries. The complimentary wireless headset tour allows visitors to both hear each instrument. In the artist gallery, you can see instruments belonging to legends such as Elvis, John Lennon, Eric Clapton, and Carlos Santana.

2. Climb Pistewa Peak

Formerly known as Squaw Peak, this 1.2 mile climb reaching an elevation of 2,200 feet delivers stunning views of downtown Phoenix and surrounding desert. Be sure to bring plenty of water and slather on the sunscreen for this fun but moderately strenuous hike just outside of Phoenix.

3. Rawhide Western Town and Steakhouse

Looking for a fun thing to do in Phoenix with the kids? The Rawhide Western Town and Steakhouse is considered to be the best Western experience in Arizona. With its authentic frontier town and attractions like gunfighter stunt shows, burro rides, petting zoo, and desert stagecoach and train rides, the Rawhide promises a great day for the whole family.

4. Heard Museum

Founded in 1929 by Dwight and Maie Heard, the Heard Museum is dedicated to the arts and culture of Native Americans, with a particular focus on communities local to the Southwest. Combining dramatic indoor and outdoor gallery and display space, the Heard Museum is home to several permanent collections and temporary exhibits. The museum opened an annex in nearby Scottsdale in 1996.

5. Phoenix Zoo

At the Phoenix Zoo, the animals’ heath and wellbeing are protected above all else. This privately-owned, nonprofit zoo is more like an animal sanctuary, with a greater focus on animal conservation than a traditional, visitor-centered zoo. Currently, the Zoo is concentrating its efforts on protecting endangered species such as the Arabian Oryx, the Mexican Wolf, and the thick-billed parrot. The zoo is spread out along 2.5 miles of walking trails. Bikes are welcome. A day at the zoo is sure to be a fun thing for the whole family.

Need more to do? Spend a beautiful day at the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden.
